Frequently asked questions
I do not hold any formal training qualification but I have been training in my workplace for many years. My company has just switched to nationally recognised training. How do I obtain the necessary qualifications?
To deliver nationally recognised training in the
workplace you must hold the
TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
This is a qualification from the TAE10 Training and Education Training Package.
The TAE40110 upgrade is a process designed for holders of the TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification wanting to upgrade to the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Trainers who do not hold the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment can apply for RPL to the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. RPL TAE10 stands for (Recognition of Prior Learning).
The RPL process for the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment can appear to be quite complex--especially to trainers who are not used to the acronyms, terms and references used in the TAE10 training package--it is becoming a language of its own. However, with the help of our friendly RPL support staff, the task of RPL to the TAE10 is not so daunting and you will soon become familiar with the system of training endorsed in VET (Vocational Education and Training).
During the RPL TAE10 process our friendly support staff will help you determine what evidence you need in order to prepare your RPL for the TAE40110 qualification. Once you have gathered all the necessary evidence for your portfolio, you will be ready to submit your RPL application.
Nationally recognised training is fast becoming the
standard for all industry and business in Australia. Nationally recognised
qualifications are already required by government, military and law enforcement
bodies. Therefore, it is in your best interest to enrol in the TAE40110
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. We strongly encourage you to do
this even if you are an experienced trainer.
Enrolling in our TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment online will provide you with new skills and help you achieve higher standards in training.
You will also be able to network with other trainers in your industry safely and privately in our online Safecity Openlearning Support Network website. This is a fun and easy to use site which links students to tutors and other students.

I deliver training under supervision, do I need the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?
No. However, until you obtain the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification you will be required to work under that supervision. Your supervisor must hold the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification. If you are about to start working under supervision you will still be required to hold the TAE10 Enterprise Trainer Skill Set or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence within two years of commencement. If you are already practising in this role you must comply with this requirement by 1 July 2013.
Additionally, it is important for you to know that
trainers working under supervision must not conduct assessments. To
conduct assessments you must be a qualified assessor and hold the three TAE

What does the term working under supervision mean?
This means that you are delivering nationally recognised training under the regular, ongoing and direct guidance of a person who holds the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent competence. Supervisors are directly responsible for the delivery of the training and they are also responsible for the issuing of certification (their signature will appear on the certificate). Supervisors do not need to be present during all the delivery sessions--however, they are required to attend some sessions.
We strongly feel that people involved in the regular delivery of VET nationally recognised training will greatly benefit from undertaking training in the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
There are occasions where industry experts, consultants and professionals are invited to deliver training on a particular aspect of a unit of competency. Guest lecturers or occasional presenters are exempt from the above mentioned requirements.
I am a volunteer trainer delivering and assessing nationally recognised training for a religious, non-profit organization or charity. I do not get paid for the work and the courses are free of charge, do I still need to hold a TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?
Under the NVR (or AQTF) there is no distinction between the paid or unpaid delivery of training and conducting assessment in the workplace. If you are regularly delivering nationally recognised training and conducting assessments within the VET system you must hold the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or work under a supervisor.
